Literacy-Project Based Curriculum

The curriculum will allow our children to be engaged in literacy activities where they will be immersed in a print rich environment. They will then move onto project based approach when they will have the opportunity to be engaged in more authentic experiences as they document their investigations.

At Caelum Junior, we emphasise on the importance of early literacy development in children through meaningful activities such as storytelling, word and rhyming games and poems. Early literacy lays the foundation for all learning as it helps children communicate, read, form concepts and comprehend, thus leading them to problem solving and making sense of the world around them.

With the project approach, children to learn through hands-on experiences and be engaged in activities that they can self-discover. This allows them to develop the ability to make choices and question when in doubt. It helps greatly in their cognitive development as it includes activities that require problem-solving, searching and looking for answers as well as it establishes cause and effect relationships. These skills are very crucial as children transit to Primary school and not forgetting in their future work life as well. In other words, the skills that children develop during the project based approach are life long and important for them to succeed as adults.

Language and Literacy

Jolly Phonics

Children will learn the letters of the alphabet and their sounds through a well-known UK phonics programme – Jolly Phonics. Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. Through carefully composed songs and stories, children will be able to recognise and identify the different sounds in phonics.

Jolly phonics also focus on penmanship, which is an essential part of children’s literacy development. We encourage children to take pride in their work and having good penmanship is one of them.

Pre-primary for Kindergarten 1 and 2

As the children embark on their kindergarten journey, they are a step closer to entering Primary One. During their kindergarten years, the children will be exposed to simple grammar practices that will help them to create sentences that they use in their creative writing. This gives the children the ability to express their thoughts, needs and wants.

Mandarin

Our bilingual programme uses Mandarin as our second language. Chinese language lessons and activities are carried out daily for all levels. Children are engaged in activities such as art and craft, songs, rhymes and storytelling.

Children from Nursery 2 start learning the strokes of the Chinese characters as well as recognising them.  As our literacy-project based curriculum is also bilingual, this will allow the children to use the languages in a more meaningful context. Children in the kindergarten level will be guided to write sentences and express themselves in Mandarin.

Hanyu pinyin is also taught to the children in Kindergarten 2.
